§ Lake Ojibway and Lake Agassiz were ancient bodies of water in North America that appears to have considerable impact on global climate, as well as cultures. These lakes existed at the end of the last Ice Age and had drained with considerable effect on the global arena.
§ Lake Agassiz it is thought to have drained in the Arctic Ocean and is a contributing factor in the Younger Dryas Stadial. For several thousand years, this Lake was joined with Lake Ojibway and would have been a significant body of water for the early residents of North America – the ancestors of the Native American tribes we are familiar with now.
§ Lake Ojibway—a sizable, ancient Lake in northeastern American continent—appearing to have drained around 8,200 years ago BCE—is thought to be the reason for a dip in the temperature around that time. Though scientists have speculated the drainage occurred into Hudson Bay – apparently something Lake Agassiz had done earlier – there is considerable evidence that it flowed into the Atlantic Ocean, passing what is now New York City, creating a delta debris field offshore. The sudden release of this lake, as well as Lake Agassiz, is seen by many as the root of the many flood stories coming to us from prehistory. Considering the sudden rise of the oceans, both events could easily be basis of many folklores and legends.

Potlatch is a celebration for the indigenous people of the Northwest America and was practiced by many of the tribes in the region. In the late 1800s, Canada and the United States banned this celebration that provided a means for the more affluent members of the tribes to provide means for lesser members as gifts. There were many Potlatch celebrations throughout the year for a variety of reasons, where gifts were provided, most often based on one’s status with in the tribe. This simple practice was seen by merchants as redistribution of wealth that took away from the need to buy products on the open market, and the Christian ministers saw it as a formidable obstacle to the conversion of Indians to Christianity.
Check out why Canada and the United States banned Potlatch (a celebration of many tribes in the Greater Northwest) and one will know why the concept of providing to a greater community has been resisted for a lot longer than people want to admit.
